Chambermaid

a recently written poem for my memoir "Gospel of a Girl"

The Brookwood Inn
was better than The Holiday Inn
but not quite The Sheraton—
not trashy but not upscale either

The nicest thing about it
was it paid a little more than Pontillo’s

I got hired to be a chambermaid
which is an antiquated way of saying
to clean hotel rooms

As with most of the other jobs I’d had—
i.e. washing dishes at Green Hills Country Club,
babys…
